Crafting Bamboo Root Ducks with Lucky Ducks.

Crafting Bamboo Root Ducks with Lucky Ducks.

Welcome to Lucky Ducks Blog!

We’re excited to share with you the fascinating process behind the creation of our unique bamboo root ducks. These charming ducks are not just products; they are the result of a meticulous and sustainable craft that supports local communities and showcases the beauty of natural materials. Here’s how we bring our bamboo root ducks to life.

The Heart of Our Ducks: Bamboo Roots

At the core of every Lucky Ducks creation is the bamboo root.
Unlike the stem, which is widely used for construction and other purposes, the root is often discarded.
However, in Indonesia, where our ducks are made, this otherwise wasted byproduct is the perfect shape and material for our duck bodies. Bamboo roots are robust, durable, and naturally shaped, making them ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.

Transforming Bamboo Roots into Duck Bodies

The journey begins with the careful selection of bamboo roots. Each root is covered in small spikes that need to be meticulously cut and shaved to create a smooth working surface. Sometimes, we leave a few spikes to add a unique character to our ducks.

Once the root is prepared, it undergoes machining to create joints. These joints are essential for attaching the wooden head and legs, which are crafted separately.

Crafting the Wooden Elements

The head and legs of our ducks are made from scrap local wood, a by-product of Indonesia’s vibrant furniture industry. Skilled artisans use a range of hand tools to carve these pieces, ensuring each one is unique and full of character.

Assembling the Duck

With all the parts ready, it’s time to bring the duck together. The head and legs are carefully affixed to the bamboo root body, creating a charming and sturdy figure. This assembly process requires precision and attention to detail, ensuring that each duck is perfectly balanced and securely constructed.

The Art of Sanding

One of the most labour-intensive steps in our process is sanding. Traditionally undertaken by local housewives, sanding provides much-needed additional income for rural families. The process involves:

- Initial Rough Sanding: Smoothing out major imperfections.

- Fine Sanding: Multiple stages using finer grades of sandpaper to achieve a polished finish.

This meticulous hand-sanding ensures that our ducks are smooth and pleasant to touch, ready for the finishing touches.

 Finishing Touches

Once assembled and sanded, our ducks are ready for their final transformation. Depending on customer preferences and market demands, we offer various finishing options:

- Wood Preservative: Protects the wood from decay.

- Wood paint: Provides us with the colours we use to create our wonderful designs

- Varnish: Provides a glossy finish and extra protection.

Each finishing option adds its own unique charm, making every duck special.
